Baskette, Jr. (512) 257-71 ~ ~ Kerr County Courthouse Judge Kerrville, Texas 78028 May 5, 1987 Judge Edwards Commissioners' Court RE: Your refusal to authorize professional dues Dear Mr. Edwards: I am disappointed in your comments to Mr. Williamson that the county should not pay for my State bar dues which are necessary for my position on the court. You know that my dues must be paid it7brder for me to retain my license, and that this license is a prerequisite to being a judge. The statute setting up this court states that I may not practice law, and therefore I have not profitability from the license itself. I am therefore requesting an appearance before the commissioners' court to discuss this matter. The court set up a budget for this court, and a line item was set up for dues and fees. The county has paid these dues in the past. Now is not the time for the county judge and auditor to decide, without consulting me, that I should not be able to use my budget as allocated. Let me ask that you change your mind and revoke your statement to Mr. Williamson without the necessity of a commissioners' court appearance. Sincerely, William L. Baskette, Jr. (572) 257-7111 Kerr County Courthouse Judge Kerrville, Texas 78028 May 19, 1987 ~~r j 9 Judge Danny Edwards Commissioners' Court RE: Dues/Fees Dear Mr. Edwards: I have conducted a small survey in the brief time since last week to determine which counties pay for their judge's state bar dues. Out of 21 counties reached, 7 do pay the dues. Those counties are: Austin Brazos Ector Guadalupe Hunt Kerr Randall One judge has chosen to be inactive in the State Bar because his county would not pay dues, and he therefore receives no benefit from attending seminars and receiving State Bar publications. Since one-third of those reached do pay the dues, and our budget set by your predecessors provides for this payment, I urge you to stay with the budget as approved, and pay these expenses. Sincerely, mot/ ' Judge Wm. L. Ba tte, Jr.
