They provide raw material for the state's forest industry, a major source of jobs and taxes, and thousands of products essential to our everyday living, and Whereas, Trees can stabilize the soil, reduce wind and water erosion, provide food and cover ' for wildlife, help keep streams and lakes clean and flowing, and serve many of our recreational needs, and Whereas, Trees are more than objects of beauty around our homes and places of work. They help improve our environment by producing life-sustaining oxygen, purifying the air we breath, absorbing noise, moderating the wind, and helping replenish our vital water resources, and Whereas, Trees are an imprortant resource and we must protect them from wildfires, destructive pests, and careless acts of man so that future generations may enjoy them, and ' Whereas, In recognition of the importance of trees to Texans, the 51st Legislature adopted a resolution which encourages Texans to observe the third Friday of January as Arbor Day.
