OCCUPATIONAL CATEGORY Skilled Craft PAY GROUP: 16 FLSA: NOI\fEXEMF':l' JOB TITLE: HEAVY EQUIPMENT SPECIALIST /MECHANIC OBJECTIVE: To have a versatile employee who can maintain andlor operate heavy equipment. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: 1. Reports to: Administrator for assignments, but may work for any area foremen. Work assignments will vary to accommodate the needs of the County Road System. 2. Directs: May Supervise equipment operators or mechanic helper. 3. Other: Depending upon assignment, has daily contact with County Road personnel. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This is a responsible position which requires mechanical ability and heavy equipment operation. Duties: Performing preventive maintenance and repairs on County vehicles and heavy equipment; and/or Operating vehicles and heavy equipment for County Road and Bridge construction and repair. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Operates heavy equipment (bulldozer, maintainer, front-end loader, roller, backhoe, dump truck, oil distributor, etc.); Maintains or constructs County Roads and right-of-ways by performing duties as assigned. May perform oil changes, battery checks, fire and lubrication checks, along with other preventive maintenance on county automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as trucks, tractors, maintainers, dozers, front-end loaders, etc; May help mechanic overhaul motors, transmissions, differentials, brakes, etc; May tow vehicles into shop for repairs if necessary; May inspects vehicles,determine problems, and provide necessary solution; Performs repair work on county vehicles and equipment as assigned. REOUIlZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good working knowledge of the safe operation of the equipment and ability to operate machinery; the ability to perform a wide variety of mechanical repairs on many different vehicles; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; good driving record; and ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other employees. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High School graduate or equivalent plus at least two years experience as a mechanic and 3 years' experience in operation of heavy equipment preferred; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSE REQUIRED: Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Commercial Operators License. Minimum Class B with a good driving record would be necessary.
