OCCUPATIONAL CATEGORY Skilled Craft PAY GROUP: 12 FLSA: NONEXEMPT JOB TTI'LE: MECHANIC HELPER OBJECTIVE: To insure efficient operation and timely repair of county vehicles and equipment. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: 1. Revorts to: Mechanic Foreman ?. Directs: May Supervise S.W.A.P. or Community Service Workers 3. Other: Depending upon assignment, has contact with other County personnel and parts suppliers. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This is a responsible position which requires mechanical ability. Duties include performing preventive maintenance and repairs on County vehicles and heavy equipment; and operating vehicles and heavy equipment for County Road and Bridge construction and repair. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Performs oil changes, battery checks, tire and lubrication checks, along with other preventive maintenance on county automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as trucks, tractors, maintainers, dozers. front-end loaders, etc; Helps Mechanic overhaul motors, transmissions, differentials, brakes. etc; May tow vehicles into shop for repairs if necessary; Does flat repair; Inspects ~°ehicles and determines if repairs or needed. Performs repair work on county vehicles listed above using hoist, hand tools, gauges, drills, grinding wheels, testing devices, welder, torch, and such other tools and equipment as may be necessary at the shop and in the field. Performs welding, braising, soldering as needed; Test drives vehicles after repair to insure that they are in proper working condition; Orders and picks up parts and supplies as needed; May operate various vehicles and equipment for road construction and maintenance. May perform repairs on stalled vehicles or equipment in the field; May drive service truck or be assigned to mechanic; and performs such other duties as may be assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good working knowledge of and ability to operate machinery and to perform a wide variety of mechanical repairs on many different vehicles; ability to work with a variety of power and hand tools; ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High School graduate or equivalent or sufficient education to read and write plus at least two years experience as a mechanic preferred but not necessary. or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSE REOUIRED: If driving is required a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Commercial Operators License. Minimum Class B with a good driving record would be necessary.
