TO: HONORABLE COMMISSIONERS COURT OF KERR COUNTY
FROM: JUSTICE OF THE PEACE OF KERR COUNTY
We respectfully request the Court to provide each of us with a Pager, in order
that we may be more readily available to the law enforcement agencies and other
agencies who need our services in Kerr County on a 24 hour per day basis.
It is required by the Code ofCriminal Procedure, Article 44.01, that we, as
Justices also act as Coroners and preside over inquests, which can occur at any
time of day or night. Also, we are required to be on call for magiatrating and
other duties - in Kerr County we alternate one week per month - which is also for
24 hours a day. During this time we are also called regularly to execute commit-
ments to the State Hospital for mental and chemical abuse patients.
In the past, the Law enforcement agencies have had great difficulty in locating the
proper Justice to perform these tasks. This is largely due to our being away from
a phone for a few minutes, not because of unavailability. There have been instances
when a Justice was performing one of these services and were needed at another loca-
tion and could not be reached.
As Justices, we took an oath to serve the people of our precinct and the County and
State, to the best of our ability, and we need the pager equipment to effectively
perform the duties of our offices.
