~! / ~O. I ~~ ~ I TEM # 2. 8 Discuss the purchase of a van for prisoner transports. As of this date '28 prisoners ar-e being housed out of Kerr County, 12 of these are paper r^eady for TDC. The rest are court committed or have to be transferred to and from Kerr^ County for court. We are currently housing prisoners in five counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bell, Coryell, and Kendall. Rusty Hierholzer will be out of the office for three months beginning in January which will put more responsibility on Alex Sanchez to help cover. I have met with the four Kerr County Constables and they have agreed to help transport inmates, which will help the Sheriff's department on man hours (comp time) and will also help to .justify their salaries. At this time, we are using two county vehicles to tr•anspor^t at one time, a van would eliminate double mileage and gas. I propose the pur^chase of a new eight passenger van for the ( Kerr County Sher-iff's Department to use for transporting inmates out of County. I estimate we will be transporting inmates for the next three years and the number to be transported will increase. I estimate the cost for a new eight passenger van at approximately 510,000.00. The Sheriff's Deparemtne will be putting up the gold car for bid which could be put toward the cost, also in 1990 then-e was a Sheriff's equipment sale of seized items held which yielded approximately 59001.00, which was put into the General Fund. The Court suggested that the Sher^iff talk to Bill Jonas to see if he may have a surpl~_~s van that the U. S. Marshall's Office may not have use for anymore. PAGE 792
