Stock Show Committee Re: Concerning the use of the covered arena for use of the Southwest Stock Horse Show. INTRODUCTION- Sandra Burger-director Shirley Bell-coordinator HISTORY OF THE SOUTHWEST STOCK HORSE SHOW; Last year it was brought to my attention by one of my students (I substituted regularly at Tivy} that there is nothing for the youth in the community to do during the winter months, unless involved in some sort of school activity. A number of the children I worked with owned horses, and did not care to be any more involved in school than absolutely necessary, in order to get a diploma. Having worked at the Juvenile Detention Center for quite some time, I am very familiar with the trouble that youngsters can stir up when they are bored. (Being a r_eenager is traumatic enough without adding boredom to the problem?) I designed the Southwest Stock Horse Show after a youth camp I was very involved in far 10 years while growing up in Canada. The Eastern Stock Horse Association offered exceptional instruction at their riding schools, and a training show at the end of the course. It was something I looked forward to all year, when I was a child. Parents could come and see the improvement after all the hours of instruction, and the children could win prizes while competing against their peers. Unfortunately my husband and I do not have the facilities to hold the clinics, or put on the horse shows, so I set out to find a person who wo~_zld host r_he activity. Live Oak Stables has hosted our shows since last October, and we have had one every month. Since the stable is a boarding and training facility, I have not brought any clinicians in to teach the children due to a conflict of interest, but I have selected judges which will work one on one with the children and give training advise after each class to each contestant. I have also added a few adult classes to help boast the entries, and provide something for the parents to do as well (a couple of classes test parents skills against childrens, such as the "egg and spoon command class" where one has to have good balnce r_o keep his egg on the spoon while following instructions of the judge. Kids lave it!) Unfortunately, the arena is not covered and we have had a drop of participants during very hot and r_.o1d weather though, and we hoped that the indoor arena could help in this aspect. As well, it could provide a neur_ral ground for clinics, and removal of any rider with unsportsmanship conduct. (please see our proposal below) GOAL OF THE SOUTHWEST STOCK HORSE SHOW; to provide exercise, fun and competition to the youth in the Hill Country, while providing a solid foundation of horsemanship and family atmosphere, which the rodeo competition does not do. COST;is kept to a bare minimum ($4.00/ class which just meets our expenses for ribbons, awards, and a little advertising) to allow all r_,hildren and their families to compete regardless of their financial status- formal attire is not required. Do to the limited funds, however, there has been limited advertising to promote the event. Excess entry fees have mainly gone to year end awards, however, my husband and I use this show as a business for tax purposes, and do hope to get a return as entries accumulate, and shawl expand. We have pur_ in many hours of coordinating the show, and recently Shirley Bell has begun to Yielp with. the overwhelming preparation for the event. There are also many others who we pay for their service (gate man, judge etc.} PARTICIPATION;we have had from 17 riders to 52. There is no way of knowing an exact amount until the day of the show. Weather has controlled much of the participation since we are presently at an out door arena. Volunteers are badly needed to open gates, hand out Numbers, keep score, help the judge ring steward, and set up jumps, barrels, etc. A minimum of 5 volunteers is very much needed. PROPOSAL;by providing us with a covered arena 4 to 6 times per year we should have mare participation at our shows, and can provide clinics with outstanding instructors frc~rn San Antonio and other areas. We ask that, if possible, you provide us with a few volunteers. We in turn, will be drawing more people to the community, and helping to find sponsors for your scholarship fund by advertising for businesses, as well as providing a place for area venders to sell their goods. On a final note, we would like to propose for your consideration that the arena could be donated for our purpose, minus the utilities. Shirley has polled area merchants who where very receptive to the idea, and wished to donate to the fund in exchange for our announcing their name at the shows. As the shows draw more entries, the Solathwest Stock Horse Show would donate a percentage of any excess monies to the youth scholarship, or Stock Show Association. Thank you L~
