JOB DESCRIPTION: CLAS S NO. 1272 PAY GROUP: 16 JOB TITLE: Animal Control Officer ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER OCCUPATIONAL CATEGORY: FLAS: Non-Exempt OBJECTIVE: To provide effective Rabies and Animal Control in Ken County. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: 1. Reports to : Local I~ealth Authority 2. Dir None 3. Other: Will perform other duties as assigned andlor required to maintain department operation and animal control facility. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Work involves investigating reports of animal bites and stray animals, adnunistering and enforcing rabies and animal controls as defined and described in the Rabies and Animal Control Order and the Texas Health and Safety Code and provide assistance as needed at the animal control facility. Work is performed within established procedures and policies involving sound judgment and initiative. All aspects of work performed is under the direct supervision of the director. The Animal Control Officer will be required to be on call after normal working hours for bites and emergency situations, and fill in at the animal control facility. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Investigate calls regarding possible exposure to rabies. Answer bite related calls. Answer complaints regarding stray or unrestrained dogs and cats. Coordinate and oversee procedures for registration, quarantine, impoundment, and de- tion of animals. 11 /96 1 of 3 page 2 Prepare and submit reports and records of work performed. May include collection, assembly and analyzing data and/or statistics. Maintain records which will track registration, investigation, complaints, bits cases ,and funds. Communicate and co-ordinated with county veterinarians and animal shelter regarding rabies and animal control concerns. Provide information, public education, and promote public awareness regarding rabies and animal control. Enforce rabies and animal control order to secwe corrections including filing charges for violations. Perform job duties within requirements established by Kerr County Personnel Policies and administrative procedwes. Complete on-going training in the form of courses, meetings, seminazs, home study cowses, etc. to maintain certification and improve job performance. Assist as needed or required in functions and operations of the animal control facility. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS. AND ABII,ITIES: Knowledge of state statutes, codes and rules pertaining to rabies control and animal control. Ability to deal tactfully with the public, including difficult people and emotional situations. Express balanced judgment especially in evaluating situations, be self-starting and show initiative, organize work, be attentive to detail, and complete forms fully and accurately. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. Basic certification in animal control as required by the Texas Department of Health. 2 of 3 page 3 CERTIFICATES AND LICENSE REQUIRED: Valid Drivers License with good driving record. Basic Anima] Control Officer certification (obtained after starting work). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Good health and physical condition to move freely by vehicle and on foot to locations and on unlevel terrain. Must be able to lift and handle animals. I~UIItED ATTIRE FOR THE OFFICER: The county will provide the uniforms and boots for the Animal Control Officer. No substitutions, i.e. jeans, short shorts or any other attire that is not appropriate. The Animal Control Officer will have a name tag that is to be worn at all time. Jewelry, i.e. rings, ear-rings, bracelets and such shall always be conservative.
