Subject: Followup to my memo of 08/26/96 concerning 1996-97 budget.
Judge Denson:
In that the time for any budget adjustment is growing short, I was checking to see
your response to my August 26, 1996 memorandum. I neglected to copy the other
members of the court with the memo and I will correct that oversight today.

Subject: 1996-1997 Budget
Judge Denson:
I would like to comment on the recommended budget for this office and ask some questions in
that regard. I note that there are two main areas of departure...line items 10-475-103 and 10-
475-570. I still maintain that we need another Assistant County Attorney. If that really is not
possible, ther. it Res my understanding that the Commissioners Ce:rrt waQ going to approve my
hiring apart-time Assistant County Attorney. We had talked of a monthly ceiling of $1,000.00.
I cannot find where that item was included within my budget. Can you direct me to that line
item so I can begin to make the plans necessary to get this office back up to speed?
The $14,000.00 reduction in my request for capital outlay is excessive in that we need five new
computers to make our network function properly. I am asking you to reconsider and increase
this line item by $5,140.00. To recap, our computers are the oldest in the courthouse, are used
the most and were purchased with hot check funds for the most part. In a computer network,
the entire network is basically as good as the weakest computer on the system. Por this reason,
your suggestion that we buy three wmputers rather than five would result in the whole system
functioning at a reduced capacity until the 1997-1998 fiscal year.
I have really sharpened my pencil and by salvaging a number of components from the existing
computers I believe that we can purchase items locally, which when assembled, will orate five
personal computers for a total of $8,140.00. Given the extremely high usage and the age of our
laser printer, we did anticipate that we would need to replace our laser printer during this budget
year at a cost of $1,000.00. We are willing to delete that item and address the issue next budget
year.
I believe that we will need eight file cabinets @$500.00 each for a total of $4,000.00. I do
believe that we caa make do with six for a total of $3,000.00. I know that $11,140.00 is quite
a bit higher than Ure recommended $6,000.00 but these are items we need and replacement is
long overdue. Please refer to our past several budgets and take notice how little we have aslred
for over the past several years for capital outlay. This is largely due to the fact that we have
paid for this equipment without burdening the general county budget.
