APGROVAL OF RESOLUTION SUGPORTING THE
VETERANS HOSPITAL OF I',ERRVILLE, F:ERR COUNTY, TEXAS

unanimously approved by a vote of 5-0-0, the resolution
supporting the Veterans Hospital of F:er•rville, N,er-r• County,
Texas.
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The South Texas Veterans Health Caze System, Kerrville Division was started in
November, 1919 by a group of Kerr County Citizens, with the aid of the Benevolent
War Risk Society, American Legion State Commander Claude Birkhead, and Texas
State Health Officer Dr. Collins and they launched a drive to raise one-half million
dollars to construct a hospital in Kerrville for the care of World Waz I veterans;
WHEREAS, the U.S. Veterans Bureau took over operations of the hospital and started accepting
patients on July 1, 1923,
WHEREAS, the Kerrville VA Medical Center has been dedicated to the health care of veterans
and this facility has consistently been rated as one of the top providers of
outstanding health care in the Veterans Administration System,
WHEREAS, the Kerrville VA Medical Center has become an integral part of the community of
Kerr County and South Texas,
WHEREAS, since 1995, the Kerrville VA Hospital has seen severe cuts in staff and services
provided to veterans and has caused a great inconvenience to the numerous veterans
in Kerr County and throughout the Hill Country and South Texas,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
This 26s' day of October, 1998, that the Kerr County Commissioners' Court
requests Senator Phil Graham, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Congressman
Lamar Smith assist Ken County in our efforts to ensure the continued operation of
the Kerrville VA Medical Center as a primary provider of outstanding health care
for the veterans in our community and throughout South Texas.
