Denson, County Judge of Kerr County, Texas and in cooperation with the residents of Kerr County, do hereby proclaim Mazch 15~` through 215`, 1998 as "NATIONAL AGRICULTURE WEEK" and call upon all citizens of our County to convey our appreciation to these dedicated professionals for the services they render to needs of our community. Signed this 9th day of Mazch, 1998. U) ~---, ert A. Denson Kerr County Judge PROCLAMATION WHEREAS; This yeazs theme for National Agriculture Week and Day is "Growing Tomorrows", which celebrates the United States Agriculture's global role. With world population at 5.5 billion today, and expected to reach 7.9 billion by the year 2020, American agriculture must meet global needs for food and fiber now and in the future. With rapid world population growth and increasing wealth in developing nations, it puts greater pressure on American farmers and ranchers to turn out even higher crop yields, to increase production of fiber for clothing, and livestock to feed this growing world we live in; WHEREAS; Agriculture is America's #1 exporter, with about 17% of raw U. S. agricu]ture products exported yeazly with $100 billion generated annually from these foreign export markets. Couple that with the $547 billion spent annually by consumers for foods originating on U.S. Farms and ranches, and that's BLACK ink on our nations ledger and a lazge contribution to our country's commerce! U.S. farmers and ranchers produce more than 200 raw commodities yeazly for domestic and import mazkets. By the year 2000, agriculture is expected to generate 25% of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product. Currently, one-fourth of the world's beef and nearly one-fifth of the world's grain, milk and eggs are produced in the U. S.; WHEREAS; U.S. farmers and ranchers continue to work diligently at producing and providing Americans with the healthiest and widest variety of foods ever, resulting in retail cuts of meat that aze 15% leaner, giving consumers better value for their dollar and lower fat and cholesterol contents. From 1965 to 1985, leaner beef cuts of 27 percent less fat reached the retail cases of our local food stores and markets. Reseazch and advancements in biotechnology now provide tastier fruits and vegetables to our local market places that stay fresh longer and are not damaged by insects. Consumers derive health benefits from the constant changing world of "farming and ranching operations", such as the production of tofu, a soy bean product, which has shown to reduce the risk of some cancer and heart disease.; WHEREAS; farmers and ranchers are the FHiST environmentalists, maintaining and improving the soil and natural resources so as to improve and better the industry that they have pledged their livelihood to. Farmers and ranchers aze indeed proud of their contribution to American, as they provide a bountiful food supply for many wildlife animals, so they can survive the winter season. Seventy-five percent of the nations wildlife live off farms and ranches. Farmers and ranchers are committed to conservation of the land that provides them their life's work, and the preservation of the right to work their land for the benefit of the world. Conservation practices have resulted in the production of 14 percent more food and fiber or 8% fewer acres. American agriculture is preserving natural resources-water, air and soil-that form the backbone of food and fiber production, examples are minimum tillage, contour farming, strip cropping and other conservation practices that have reduced soil erosion by 25% over the past 10 yeazs; WHEREAS; with only 2% of the U.S. population working our country's farms and ranches, but providing empioyment to more than 17 million Americans, be it known that these 2% are proud of their contribution to america and will continue to work and caze for the land, water and air that provides for all Americans. U.S. farmers and ranchers are committed to protecting, conserving, and improving the land that provides food for it's citizens at the LOWEST COST IN THE WORLD which is on the average, 11% of a persons income.; NOW THEREFORE BE IT KNOWN: That I, Robert A. Denson, County Judge of Ken County, Texas, do hereby proclaim Mazch 15 - 21, 1998 as "NATIONAL AGRICULTURE WEEK" to help remind us of the importance of American agriculture and the men and women who make it heir life's work to feed and clothe us.
