KERR COUNTY WOMEN'S CHAMBER INC. A Community Interaction Organization POBOX261 KERRVILLE, TX ?8029-0621 January 14, 1339 Honorable Judge Fred Henneke Commissioner's Court Kerr Count Courthouse 700 Main Street Kerrville, Texas 7802E Dear Judge Henneke: The Kerr County Women's Chamber, Inc., have a new project we want very much to undertake during 1999. It will involve all of Kerr County as well as the City of Kerrville. We want to explain what we have in mind for this project and to have your Blessing and cooperation before we go further. We will call this new project "Time Capsule 2000". LVe would like to get all of Kerrville and Kerr County involved; our two governing councils, schools, churches, civic groups, his- torical society, etc. In other words, everything and every- body that makes this a great community. We will collect statistics, pictures, maps of the city and county, newspaper articles, names of our governing bodies as of January 1, 2000, hold contests for school children as to what they think have been the most important inventions, etc. of the past 100 years and what they think will happen in the next 100 years, names of the oldest family owned ranches and businesses in Kerr County, pictures of our hospitals and their plans for the future, City/County plans for improvements and expansions, etc. The prospects for material for this Time Capsule are unlimited. Unfortunately, space in the capsule will not be. Our plan would be for this Time Capsule to be buried on January 1, 2000, and for it to be opened by City/County offi- cials on January 1, 2100 in a public ceremony. It would be buried in a prominent place so that in 100 years officials would be well aware of its existence and that it is to be opened that day. At the present time, we would think that someplace on the courthouse lawn would be the most logical place. We propose placing all the material in a concrete vault type capsule and burying it with a bronze marker that reads "Time Capsule 2000 to be opened January 1, 2100". We will get expert advise on perserving the material and sealing the capsule. tide would like to have all the material collected by October 1, 1999, so we can have time to go through all of it, sort it, catagorize it, place all the school, church, business, govern- ment, etc. in binders for placing in the capsule. We would be Page -2- Time Capsule 2000 glad to have a committee with representatives from the ~iistorical Society, City Council and County Commissioners along with our Women's Chamber project chairman, make the final decisions on what goes into the capsule. On January 1, 2000, we will invite the community to the ceremony and the Mayor and County Judge can shovel the first scoops of dirt to bury the capsule. Wouldn't it have been wonderful if on January 1, 1900, the community had buried a capsule for us to open that day? Your ideas and suggestions are sincerely solicited along with your blessing. We will work hard to make this a successful project and to get the whole community involved. There will be some expense involved in mailings, purchase of the capsule and bronze placque, notebooks, etc. Do you think if we were to ask for a donation of $25.00 from each group that submits materials to be included in the capsule, it would be out of line? .Je eagerly await your reply as we do not want to proceed or put anything in the newspapers until we hear from you and the Mayor, to whom we are sending this same letter. Very truly yours, Ci\~ Delores Li ngstoi Project Chairman Kerr Co. Women's Chamber, Inc. P.O. Box 621 Kerrville, Tx. 78029-0621 257-4403
