PROCLAMATION
BY THE
COUNTY JUDGE OF RERR COUNTY
I hereby declare the week of September 19-25, 1999, as
Farm and Ranch Safety and Health week in KERB COUNTY for the
following reasons:
WHEREAS, this is the 56th anniversary of the National
Farm Safety and Health week, emphasis is placed on prevent-
ing injuries and fatalities on farms and ranches and
WHEREAS, with the start of the new millennium, the 1999
theme PROTECTING AGRICULTURE INTO THE NEXT CENTORY should be
a goal for all farmers and ranchers. Many injuries and
fatalities could be reduced on farms and ranches by focusing
on preventive measures. Some of the measures that will help
prevent injuries and fatalities are Rollover Protective
Structures (BOPS) for tractors, new safety initiatives to
reduce injuries for higher risk farmers and ranchers under
the age of 25 and over the age of 55, and prohibiting extra
riders on tractors and equipment.
Although the theme of this year's observance focuses
on the next century, we must remember that presently agri-
culture is the second most hazardous industry in the nation
with a rate of over 22 deaths per 100,000 workers compared to
mining with a death rate of 24.3 per 100,000 workers. The
industry average is 3.8 deaths per 100,000 workers.
Statistics also show an estimated 780 deaths and 140,000
disabling injuries in agriculture during 1998. Agriculture
has long been one of the most hazardous American industries.
Safety and Health Education play a vital role in reducing
fatalities and injuries on the farm.

THEREFORE, I urge farmers and ranchers to focus on
farm and ranch safety and education.
