See Agenda Request Ruks Adopted by Corranissiotters' Court. 2000 ANN[JAL REPORT KERR COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION To KERR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT February 12, 2001 2000 Annual Report Kerr County Historical Commission By charter the Historical Commission is to report annually to the Court on the following: Activities Membership Leadership Therefore, this report is being presented for the records of Ken County on February 12, 2001. In addition to the required part of this report, a 2001 status report will update the Court on the current needs of the Commission and expected activities. 2000 ACT'IVIT'IES Markers During the year 2000 two Texas Historical Markers were dedicated: Major James Rerr - On December 23, the date that Major James Ken died, a marker in his name was dedicated on the Courthouse grounds with about 75 people in attendance, including over 25 direct desendance of Kett. Cade House -Earlier in the year the Cade House Texas Historical Marker was dedicated with about 35 in attendance. The following markers have been submitted to the Texas Historical Commission: A.C. Schreiner, Sr. Residence Rose House in West Kerrville Woolls Building in Center Point Zion Lutheran Church Union Church Building Restorations Work continues on the Old Union Church Building. As money becomes available through fund raising efforts on the part of the Friends of the Kerr County Historical Commission, work is performed. The effort at this time is to complete the front of the building in order to provide a more attractive appearance from the approaching streets. The south side will be completed in phase II. There will be inside work performed until the exterior is completed. Calendar 2001 In an effort to raise money for the work on the Union Church Building, a 2001 Historical calendar has been developed and is now being provided throughout the community fora $10.00 donation. As you know the Friends area 501 (c) 3 corporation. Therefore, all funds go through the Friends account and applied to the restoration of the Union Church Building. Qral History This project continues on track with over 30 oral history interviews being completed with over 100 remaining to be done. Each yeaz the list of those to be interviewed get larger. This will be an on going project for the Commission for many years to come. Archives The Commission Archives Room is still located in a small room in the basement of the Courthouse. To date there are thousands of pieces of Kerr County history located in this small room. However, they are not available to the public due to the location and size of the room. Bobbie Rector, a local azchaeologist, has thousands of Kea County artifacts and still has his offer on the table to donate those items to the Commission when adequate space has been made available to properly store and display them. Courthouse Display Cabinet The display cabinet has been completed and is waiting coordination with Glenn Holekamp to be installed. MEMBERSHIP Membership stands at 13 active members and 12 members in name only for a total of 25 members. The 12 members, in name only, have attended very few meeting nor have they participated in projects but still want to be considered a member of the Commissio The Commission meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Butt-Holdsworth Library at 11:45 am in the down stairs meeting room. As fast as "Friends" raise the money, the Commission will spend it in an organized plan of restoration. Display Cabinet Now that the cabinet is completed, plan will be put in place to see that the installation is done according to the Courts wishes. Oral History The oral history projects will continue. Hopefully another 20 interviews can be completed during 2001. Historical Marker Location Brochure The brochure showing the location of all historical markers in the county needs to be updated and reprinted. CVB has agreed to help in the printing cost once the updated information has been provided. Calendar 2002 The "Friends" historical calendar for 2002 will be based on historical building in Kerr County. The plan is to provide a historical picture and a current picture if the building is still standing. History Library The Commission will continue to work with the library staff during the restoration of the History Library Building in the storage and display of the Oral Histories. Membership The Commission still has a great need for individuals that are willing to work within the Commission and actively work on projects.
