We are requesting additional funding for interpreters line Item No. 427-496 of the jury
budget. This line item provides funds for a court interpreter to translate for jail inmates who do
not speak or understand English. It has been a tremendous help to the Court to have the
interpreter in court for our jail docket. However, we have run out of funds. We have a defendant
who is hearing impaired and have had to appoint a certified interpreter from San Antonio who can
sign in Spanish and English. According to the American Disabilities Act, we are required to
appoint him an interpreter for any court appearances. We have to pay travel time for them too, at
$50.00 per hour. Due to that expense, the funds in that line item are just about depleted. The
defendant is scheduled to make one more appearance in court, and I estimate that we will need an
additional $700.00 to finish out this budget year.
