COLLEEN McHUGH COMMISSIONERS JA[vIES SCHIv1IDT KERRVII,LE SO 400 CLEARWATER PASEO KERRVII,LE TX 78028 Dear JAMES SCFIIv11DT: SUBJECT: TLETS Satellite Conversion The Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (TLETS) satellite conversion is well underway. To date the Department of Public Safety has migrated over 500 agencies from leased telephone lines to Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT). The VSAT satellite network provides an increased traffic capacity that will eventually enable transmission of images, files, and other enhancements. - A few agencies are using very old devices such as "Telex 046" and DOS based 80/286 vintage personal computers with SNA terminal emulation packages to support their TLETS connection. We have learned that due to outdated processors and graphics adapters these devices are unable to translate the more intense data streams associated with VSAT. Our records indicate your agency may still be operating with such equipment. If so, upgrading to a more current technology will be necessary to maintain your TLETS connection. Please feel free to contact us if you aze unsure of your equipment capabilities or if you have equipment other than what our records indicate. Following is a list of equipment specifications to assist you with your purchase. Please be advised that the Department of Public Safety cannot rerommend or endorse any particular vender, product manufacturer, or consultant. After upgrading your equipment, please notify the TLETS Order Center at (512) 424-2256 so we can proceed with satellite conversion for your agency. We understand you may need additional time to fund, purchase, and install new equipment, and we will work with you to the greatest extent we can until an upgrade is possible. Our goal is to have all TLETS users migrated to VSAT by the end of this year. We realize that this may not be possible in all cases, but we ask your cooperation in procuring the equipment to successfully make the conversion. Sind Roger Killingsworth, Assistant Chief Information Management Service CUNNEC•17UN UPTION DESCRIP•1'IUNS A wide range of compatible equipment is available. Makes and models of controllers, terminals or printers shown aze for compatibility reference only. VSAT installation requires the user agency to install a voice-grade telephone line that will be used solely for the satellite's Automatic Dial Backup modem. SINGLE USER (1 workstation and 1 printer) • A personal computer or other arrangement of CRT and keyboard Suggestion for PC's supporting TLETS: • Pentium class processor • 20 GIG hazd drive • 600+ MHZ • 128 MB Memory • Operating system compatible with the remote version of your 3270 emulator and software. • 3270 Emulation softwaze with hardware adapter. (The hazdware must accommodate an RS232 connection.) Remote SDLC controller device with appropriate remote 3270 terminaUprinter emulation software. The minimum PC configuration will probably be determined by the agency's choice of remote SNA/SDLC controller boazd; a configuration that handles that board will likely suffice for TLETS. A printer emulating an IBM 3287, this must be a network addressable printer. MULTI-USER (Supporting multiple workstations and printers depending on configuration) • Remote Control Unit, equivalent to either an 1BM 3174 or IBM 3172 or IBM 3745 (supports synchronous and asynchronous terminals and printers) • Data terminal, equivalent to an IBM 3278 • A network addressable printer emulating an ffiM 3287 • Local Area Networks supporting multiple terminals and printers, a remote SDLC controller device, along with appropriate 3270 terminaVprinter emulation software. To ensure accurate message delivery, we do not support "pooled" LUs; each physical terminal must have a dedicated logical unit. We also support computer-to-computer connections to our OS/390 mainframe via APPC (LU6.2) protocol, in single- or multi-session modes. This mode requires the user to have his o.~: interactive screens and message formatting programs. The user must route all messages within his agency. Note also that even though the logical units behind the LU6.2 session aze transparent to DPS, we still require the floor plans and access details for each terminal (mobile digital terminals excepted). For more information regazding LU6.2 access, please contact TLETS Administration at (512) 424-2266.
