INTRODUCTION The Old Union Church Building is a key part of Kerrville's past. The Kerr County Historical Commission (KCHC) has been given the opportunity to save this past and preserve a significant part of history for the present and future. Kerrville has tom down much of its history in the down town area. This will be an endeavor to save a little of that history. A. Save Union Church Through the generosity of Mr. Jim Nugent, a local attorney, former State Legislator and member of the State Railroad Commission, the Union Church Building has been given to the people of Kerr County, way of the KCHC, to be preserved and restored in a effort to preserve some of Kemille's past. The KCHC has taken the initial steps to make this happen. A committee was formed to address all phases of the project including: site selection, financing, restoration, tuilization, historical, publicity and alternate solutions. With support of the citizens of Kerr County, especially those denominations that originated in the old Union Church Building, this will be a successful effort to preserve the past history. ,~-~ B. History Kerrville, as a small pioneer village, in the 1880s had no place to worship. Mrs. Whitfield Scott, the mother of Mrs. A.C. Schreiner, Sr., with the help of her sister Mrs. Laura Gill, took it upon themselves to collect money to build a church with the help of Mrs. J.M. Starkey and Mrs. Adeline Coleman. Historical records show some of those contributing are familiar names to the Kemille community: Captain Charles Schreiner, A.C. Schreiner, S.B. Rees, S.C. Barnett, D.B. Lowrance, Scott, Bilmer 8c Company, F.M. Moore, R.H. Burney and many others. The largest single donation vas $100.00. The building was completed about Christmas, 1885, by A. Allen and Company. His bid was reported to be $190.00. However, it is not known for sure what was actually included in that price. The original congregations to use the new building were the Methodist Episcopal Church, The Cumberland Presbyterian Church, The Missionary Baptist, and the Christian Church. As each of the denominations grew, they built their own church building. Finally only the Christian Church remained. In 1925 the Union Church Building was deeded to the Christian Church. This deed was recorded September 9, 1925. In 1955, a new First Christian Church was built and the Union Church Building was eventually sold to Mr. Jim Nugent and moved several time until located on Lemos Street where it served as the Army Navy Surplus Store. At the time the KCHC got involved in the project, the building ._ was being used for storage by Mr. Nugent.. Mr. Nugent donated the building to Kerr County provided the building would be moved from his site on Lemos Street. The Court turned the project over to the KCHC as a Kerr County project. II. PURPOSE The general purpose of "Save the Union Church Building" is to preserve part of Kerrville's history and provide an asset to the community for all to be proud. A. Preserving History The history of this structure goes back to 1834 when a few Kerrvile women set out to provide a place of worship for its citizens. This effort came to realization on Christmas, 1885. That history is worth preserving. B. Community Asset Preserving the county's historical past and restoring that past into a community asset should be a plus for all the area. Having the old Union Church Building serving the community as a meeting place for upwards of 100 people, with an open layout for multi purpose use, would be a positive approach. The downtown and the surrounding area would have a sorely needed facility. There are endless numbers of uses of such a structure in our business community, especially when it comes too small meeting place. Where as so many of Derr County pioneer families have a religious connection, this preservation and restoration will be a true asset to the area. C. Future So much of Kerrville's history has been removed in the name of progress. However, here is an opportunity to save a little bit of that history for the future. The current and future generations need to be able to physically relate to what the past was like. One room schools, one room churches, soda fountains, local coffee shops, old courthouses, historical sites are all part of what should be preserved for the future. HI. OBJECTIVE The general objective of this effort is to preserve and restore the Old Union Church Building to a usable community asset in a location suitable for extensive utilization.
