February 25, 2002 Judge Frederick L. Henneke Kerr County 700 Main Street Kemille, Texas 78028 Dear Judge Henneke: Agriculture begins with the land, but it embraces an industry that provides products essential to our everyday lives. The week of March 17 to 23 is National Agriculture Week in Texas, a time when we recognize the rich heritage that is agriculture. During this week, I ask you to join me in honoring the farmers and ranchers whose dedication and commitment to the land and people of Texas make our agricultural industry thrive. Educating people about agriculture helps to instill in them a profound sense of where things come from. It focuses their attention upon the impact agriculture has on their lives, from the food they eat to the clothes they wear to the resources they use at home and at work. Please join me again in honoring our agricultural community by adopting an Ag Week proclamation for your jurisdiction and by using the enclosed information to focus the spotlight upon [his valuable resource that means so much to your area. If you need additional information or assistance with Agriculture Week activities, contact Jo Moss at (512) 475-1658, a-mail Jo.Moss@agr.state.tx.us. Sincerely, ~. Susan Combs Commissioner OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION From the hustle and bustle of the city to the quiet of a West Texas prairie, this state is as diverse as its people yet bound with the common thread that is Texas agriculture. That thread comes from the hard work and dedication of Texas farmers, ranchers and many other agriculture professionals. Each and every Texan has a vital stake in agriculture. As the state's second- largest industry, agriculture has an annual impact of $80 billion on the Texas economy. One out of every five Texans works in an agriculture-related industry, and about 80 percent of the state's land is used for farming and ranching. Agriculture is all around us - in chemistry, communications, rural economics, international business, and satellite and computer technologies. What's more, Texas agriculture produces large quantities of high quality food and fiber. It plays a major role in health and nutrition as well as in water conservation, rural economic development, global trade and the preservation of the environment. When we say `GO TEXAN,' we are reminding everyone that the product is homegrown and sold by friends and neighbors who care about their land and the quality of their products. Understanding agriculture gives us a sense of where things come from and how those things are important in our daily lives. Whether you produce the food and fiber, prepare and deliver the finished products, or just consume them, you can take pride in Texas agriculture. It is an industry that continues to meet the ever-increasing needs of consumers throughout Texas and around the world. Therefore I, Susan Combs, do hereby proclaim the week of March 17 to 23, 2002, as NATIONAL AGRICULTURE WEEK IN TEXAS and urge all Texans to recognize those producers who help add quality to our lives.
