They are the Kerrville Independent School District, enrollment 4,670; Center Point Independent School District, enrollment 555; Divide Independent School District, enrollment Hunt Independent School District and Ingram Independent School District, enrollment 1,502. Kerr County has obligated itself to provide three School Resource Officers exclusively to the five school districts. Currently the Kemille and Center Point School Districts each have a separate officer assigned to them and the Ingram, Divide, and Hunt School Districts share an officer. Each officer's assignment consists of patrolling, counseling and teaching within each District. At this time two officers are DARE certified and the third is scheduled to attend DARE certification this summer. These officers presently teach tobacco education, which includes resistance and compliance. Our officers write citations on campus and surrounding areas for minors in possession of tobacco and investigate criminal activities involving studcnts. They also work closely with Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission in the area. The curriculum at this time consist of teaching elementary and middle school children the negative effects tobacco products have on society, including available products, health hazards, costs to consumers and society. Mortality rates involving tobacco are also taught along with the risks of second hand smoke. The School Resource Officers also teach the laws regarding the prohibition of the sale and use of tobacco products by minors. The impressions of the lessons and the quality of the presentations are the foundation of the efforts of the School Resource Officers. With the purchase of a LCD Data Projector, lap top computer and a digital camera, 1 feel the lessons taught by the officers will have a longer lasting effect on the students because of the presentation. Historically, lessons taught that incorporate interesting facts and an interesting presentation would leave an enduring memory on the students. If the lessons are made to be fun, the younger students will retain more and with the advent of these aids, I believe the lessons can be presented in an enjoyable fashion. All three School Resource Officers in each school district will use the equipment thereby increasing the range of use and effectiveness of [he information presented. The equipment can he purchased for a total of $ 7977.00. The breakdown is as follows; digital camera $571.00, lap top computer $ 1430.00, and LCD data projector $ 5976.00. Each school district has openly accepted the aid of the Resource Officers and supports them. The classes held by each officer touch not only the children they teach, but are taken home and reach the parents of the students. This in turn has a snowball effect throughout the community. The DARE graduations presented by the Kerr County School Resource Officers are events that are attended by not only students but also [heir families and friends. The equipment proposed will also be used in the productions. We currently have [o borrow the equipment when it is available.
