For the last three years, a group of local ctizens have raised over $230,000, all in local funds, with the exception of a $2,500 grant from the Summerlea Foundation in Dallas, to preserve the church building. The enclosed pictures show the major stages of the restoration project. This project was undertaken three years ago, and was made possible because of many local fund raisers to benefit the restoration. Fund raisers were historical calendars depicting historical sites in Kerr County; commemorative plates, garage sales, telephone bill enclosures and three mail-outs, plus a $50,000 grant from a local individual and $8,500 from a local community foundation. The restoration workmanship is signature quality. Through an agreement with Schreiner University Board of Tnastees and the site selection committee of the Ken- County Historical Commission, the church building was moved to the southwest comer of the Schreiner University campus on Quinlan Creek at Highway 27 and Travis Street. This prominent location gives the stricture prime visibility on a major traffic artery into Kerrville. In addition to preserving a historical monument that commemorates the religious life of Kerr County, the building was restored for the Kerr County community of 43,000 people as a place to gather for presentations of historical programs, community gathering for forums, lundieons, lectures, musical, weddings, various programs, etc. Field trips to the site by public school lasses will offer an opportunity for teaching area students about the past life of early settlers. Though unfinished, requests have already been made to use the building. Background and History In 1880, a time when Kenville's growing pioneer village had no place to worship, a group of pioneer women raised funds from local folks to build The Union Church building. They raised $1100.00 with the largest contribution being $150.00. Historical records show the names of early settlers such as Captain Charles Schreiner, A. C. Schreiner, S. H. Rees, S. C. Barnett, D. 6. Lowrance, Scott, Bilmer & Company, F. M. Moore, R. H. Burney to be among the contributors to the building. Some descendants of these families still reside in Kerr County. The building was completed in time for the first service to be held on Christmas Eve in 1885. Though there are remaining projects to complete, one hundred and seventeen years later on, December 24, 2002, the church was re-dedicated by the dtizens of Kerr County to remember our past and to acknowledge our future. The original congregations who worshiped in the church were the Methodist Episcopal Church, The Cumberland Presbyterian Church, The Missionary Baptist, and the Christian Church. As these denominations grew, they built their own church buildings. The Christian Church was the only remaining congregation. On September 9, 1925, the Union Church Building was deeded to the Christian Church. In 1955, the First Christian sold the Union Church Building to Mr. Jim Nugent, whose parents had worshiped there. It was moved to a lot on Francisco Lemos Street and used for commerdal purposes until its future was determined. Current History of the Union Church Through the generosity of Mr. Jim Nugent, the Union Church building was given to the people of Kerr County. The Ken- County Commissioner's Court accepted the gift in an effort to preserve a significant part of Kemrille's past. Kerr County Court passed the project to the Ken• County Historical Commission for development. The Historical Commission organized The Friends of the Historical Commission to undertake development and fund raising for approved projects. Today there are twenty-eight local churches that can trace their origin to the Old Union Church Building. Trapping and memorabilia characteristic of the time will be placed in the building. The building was restored as closely as possible to its original state. It is envisioned that this old church building can bring messages of the past to the children of today and tomorrow. Kerr County owns the property and will provide the maintenance. Completion Time of Project: This project will be completed within approximately three months after receipt these grant funds. AND HERE'S THE STEEPLE New steeple placed atop historic Kerrville church By ROSA LAVENDER Times Staff Writer An old-fashioned steeple raising with the help of modem technology - a crane - was performed at the historic Union Church building shortly before noon Monday. The original Kerrville church, built 117 years ago, has a permanent home on the corner of 1Yavis Street and Memorial Boulevard on the Schreiner University campus. "This is an exciting day because so many people have worked to make this possible," said Schreiner University President Tim Summerlin. "This building has so much meaning for the whole community, so much a part of the history and meaning of Kerrville and it has touched so many lives." Summerlin said it was a pleasure for Schreiner University to provide a place for a building that should be permanently preserved for generations of Hill Country residents. The City of Kerrville provided funds for a permanent foundation for the building. With the steeple in place and the exterior of the building close to completion, workers will move inside to begin restoring the interior.
