Parker Executive Director J: ~~~ •~~Q', , T'•. . ~ :•~ ; ~ ~ :~ ` ~ y: .~ ~: STATE OF TEXAS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR Through various services, from Galveston to El Paso, from Corpus Christi to Amarillo, local community mental health and mental retardation (MHMR) centers help Texans with mental retardation and various mental health conditions to lead productive lives. Solid partnerships among families, community MHMR centers and the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation lead to stronger communities. Nearly 200,000 Texans and their families rely on the services of community MHMR centers in Texas to get the specialized support they need. Centers bring together federal, state and local resources to expand community care options for Texans and provide the necessary support to facilitate living and working independently. Annually, the Texas Council of Community MHMR Centers, Inc. highlights the work of Texas' community MHMR centers and sponsors "Destination Dignity" to promote community awareness and celebrate the accomplishments of their clients. In recognition of this important effort, I urge all Texans to recognize and appreciate the valuable role of Texas families, consumers, state facilities, private providers and community MHMR centers in forming the partnerships that allow Texans with serious mental disabilities to reach their full potential as valued members of their communities. Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim September 2003, Destination Dignity Month in Texas, and urge the appropriate recognition whereof.
