Earth Day proclamation draft Contact: Mary Ellen Summerlin, Riverside Nature Center, 257-4837 Whereas April 22, 1970, Americans came together for the very first Earth Day to create awareness, responsibility and action toward a clean, healthy environment for all living things; And whereas the people's voice of their concern for a healthy environment has led to passage of legislation such as the Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act; And whereas the celebration of Earth Day became an international observance in 1990, with 200 million people from 141 nations participating; And whereas the citizens of Kerr County treasure the beauty of their Hill Country environment and share a sense that stewardship of our natural resources is the stewardship of the American Dream; And whereas the Kerrville Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas and Riverside Nature Center Association, along with the Upper Guadalupe River Authority, Headwaters, and the City of Kerrville have joined together to sponsor a celebration of Earth Day this year on April 24, 2004, at the Riverside Nature Center with a plant sale of native plants, educational seminars and exhibits on the value of trees to our environment, a poster contest for middle school students and music, food and fun; Now therefore, I, Pat Tinley, Judge of Kerr County, Texas, do hereby declare April 24, 2004, Earth Day in Kerr County and encourage all citizens to join in the spirit of Earth Day by attending the celebration at the Nature Center and by observing practices of good stewardship of our precious natural heritage every day.
