Rationale for Hiring a Juvenile Detention Officer at a Higher Pay Step than Entrance Step 1. Female Certified Juvenile Corrections Officer for TYC in San Saba for 8 years 2. Experience working with juveniles, groups, state regulations, documentation, security policies, and abuse & neglect reporting policies 3. She has current physical restraint (Handle With Care} certification and current First Aid and CPR certification. This is a total of 16 hours of training that the facility does not have to repeat. 4. She is moving to Kerrville to be with family members 5. She is a professional and understands juvenile corrections and treatment-she "speaks the language" 6. It is rare that someone with extensive juvenile correctional experience applies and is employed at the facility. Entrance gradelstep at present time for juvenile detention officers is 12/1=$18,959 Proposed hiring grade/step for certified officer with 8 years experience is 12/4=$20,417 This is an increase of $1458 per year. On the 8-month budget submitted and approved by commissioner's court, this would be $851 over the next 7 months as she would not begin employment until March 15~' and the current budget expires Sept. 30~'. The 16 hours of training figures to $9.81/hr.for the prospective employee. This is a savings of $157.00. Propose that the $851 be transferred from the "Contract Services" line item #572-109 to the "Detention Officers" line item #572-104. This will reduce the contract services line item from $53,360 to $52,509 for the next 7 months. ,~
