FERGUSON BIOGRAPHY
Mel Ferguson was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. Upon graduation from high
school, Mel ventured to Texas in order to attend college. Graduating from Houston
Baptist University in 1971, Mel continued his academic pursuits in Texas by entering
graduate school at Southern Methodist University, graduating from Perkins School of
Theology in 1974. Shortly thereafter, Mel was commissioned into the U.S. Navy
Chaplain Corps as Lt (j.g.) in January 1975. Serving on both coasts and overseas with
both Navy and Mazine Corps units, Mel deployed with destroyer squadrons, making
numerous major deployments across the Atlantic into the Mediterranean, as well as to
CenfraUSouth American waters. While serving with Marines in 1979/80 (2nd Battalion,
4d' Marines), Mel traveled throughout the Western Pacific for 13 months in an
operational, expeditionary status.
As Command Chaplain aboard USS IOWA (BB 61), 1985-87, Mel deployed to Northern
Europe twice, the Arctic, the Mediterranean, South America, and through the Panama
Canal four times en route to Pacific operations. A highlight of his tour aboard Battleship
IOWA was to meet President & Mrs. Ronald Reagan as IOWA served as the presidential
viewing platform for the pazade of tall ships in conjunction with the 150a' anniversary of
the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.
Mel has served at the highest levels of military leadership, spending 11 of his 29 active
duty years in Washington, DC. He served on the staff of the Secretary of Defense, and
retired from the U.S. Navy in January 2004 while serving as the Joint Staff Chaplain to
the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Captain Ferguson was formally recognized for his
actions in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon.
Captain Ferguson's personal military decorations include the Defense Superior Service
Medal (2), the Legion of Merit (2), the Meritorious Service Medal (5), the Joint Service
Commendation Medal, and the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Captain
Ferguson was also the first military chaplain to be sent to both his Service school, The
Navy War College (Newport, RI) and the military's senior Service school, the National
War College (WASH, DC) where he was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate and
recipient of the Commandant's Excellence in Writing awazd. Throughout his career, Mel
has been published in several military and civilian journals. Mel also earned advanced
degrees from San Diego State University and Princeton Seminary. Mel's Navy cazcer
track has led the Ferguson family to live in Florida, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington
DC, California and Hawaii.
While in college, Mel met the former Linda Foulis of Houston, Texas. They were
married in 1969. Linda and Mel have two daughters: Julie Breedlove of Dallas, Texas;
and Melinda Mason of Scottsdale, AZ. Linda and Mel are also proud of their five
grandchildren. Upon retirement in 2004, Linda and Mel returned to Texas and built their
retirement home in Horseshoe Bay.
