It's my pleasure to welcome you here today to the swearing in ceremony for the Kerr County elected officials who take office today, and I am very, very pleased to see so many people here today coming out on a holiday and joining us for this purpose. If we might, if I could call on Judge Vance Elliott to lead us in a word of prayer as we start this new year. Judge Elliott? (Prayer.) JUDGE TINLEY: Thank you, Judge Elliott. In addition to the oath of office that each elected official will take today, each elected official is required to do an affirmation under state law to the effect that that individual has not directly or indirectly paid, offered, promised to pay, contributed, or promised to contribute any money or thing of value or promised any public office or employment for the giving or withholding of a vote at the election at which that individual was elected, or as a reward to secure that individual's appointment or confirmation, whichever the case may be. We're also privileged to have with us today the newly elected officials of the Headwaters Underground Conservation District. I keep wanting to call it a different title, but they've changed that, so I think I got it right that time. The two newly elected directors, Mr. Gordon Morgan, the Director from Precinct 1, who is to be sworn in today, and Diane McMahon, the newly elected Precinct 3 director who is to be sworn in today. I would remind you that the effectiveness of a representative government is only as good as the communication between the citizens and those that they elect to represent them. What I'm asking is what I've asked repeatedly from all of you and other citizens; if there's anything on your mind about county government, please bring it to our attention. ~I~ I'm confident I'm speaking for the other elected officials of this county. We want to know what is on your mind. We represent you and we want to do your will, but you need to communicate with us, and we would ask that you do that. Criticisms, kudos, suggestions, ideas. Just communicate, please. I also want to thank those who have stood by me over these years, particularly my wife and family. And, honey, happy anniversary. (Applause.) JUDGE TINLEY: Thank you. If any of the Commissioners have anything they feel they need to bring to the attention of this assembly, why, come forward and let us know what's on your mind.
