Kerrville Memorial Post No. 208 To All Concerned Citizens, On Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, Veterans' Day, American Legion Post 208 will sponsor a marathon march with the objective to raise funds for the Kerrville Veterans' Hospital long term care units. There are three long term care units at the hospital with a total of 154 beds. The general purpose of this effort is making the rooms and community areas more home-like. This is the last home that many of these veterans will have on this earth, and to create a living environment that is warmer and more pleasant and a living situation that encourages more interaction among residents is very important. More specifically, the project will purchase for the sleeping rooms bed spreads that offer more color and design than the normal hospital spreads do; silk plants; and small tables, desks, or vanities as may be appropriate. For the community areas, sections of those rooms will be outfitted with tables and coffee and juice machines. Tables more suitable and set aside for games such as cards, dominoes, and other entertainment will be purchased. Every so often picnic lunches and games will be held. The final plans for changes and ~,, additions have not yet been decided and a significant part of those decisions depends on you. These men and women served this country in uniform in war. You see the old pictures of World War II and the homecoming parades -the joy and tears. However, fifty-plus years later many of these men and women who served this nation in times of great danger are now facing the end of their lives in very difficult medical conditions, sometimes more challenging than war. One man we knew passed on a year ago. He brutally was forced down the Bataan Death March twice. It broke our hearts to visit him and talk with the old soldier who had worked in Japanese mines as a slave for four years, and then to see him be confined to a wheelchair minus his legs over his last years. Many do not have families nearby. Daily, they only have each other and their nurses. We have the opportunity to help these men and women. To that end, on this Veteran's Day, members of the Kerrville American Legion Post 208 will march as far as our legs will take us and then some; and we ask for your pledge of financial support for the purposes stated for these veterans in our Kerrville V.A. Hospital. Please send pledges or donations to American Legion Post 208 at the address below and a note that it is for the Veterans March. One hundred percent of all donations will be set aside for this project. Our friend had to march across Bataan at the point of a bayonet; we can march to Center Point and return. Join us with you donations. David Risner Larry V er + ~ ,~. Commander Servi Officer P.O. Box 290121 Kerrville, Texas 78029-0121 zs-7 _ ~y~4 Veterans' Victor March On Sunday, November 11, 2007, American Legion Post 208 will sponsor a walk to raise money for the V.A. Hospital long-term care units as explained in the attached letter. It is seventeen miles long from Wharton Road at its intersection with Hwy. 173 along the River Road and through Center Point and RETURN along the same route as shown on the attached map. Individuals may on their own decide to walk from the Legion to Wharton Road (about three miles) and meet the rest at the starting line. Some may also decide to walk back those last three miles to -the Legion. However, please note that any walk on Hwy. 173 is on your own. Some individuals may choose to walk longer than one leg and possibly walk the entire trip. Hr •ever, given our age group we do not want to cause anyone physical harm, so consider p~eing together six-person relay teams with one person for each leg. There will be three "pit stop" sites with one at the end of each leg, although there are no port- s-potties. There will be coolers with ice-downed water and Gatorade and snacks at each pit stop. Wait until the end for alcoholic beverages. In addition, we will provide food (maybe Sloppy Joe's or sausage -have not vet decided) at the end at the Legion. We are requesting that all participants join together at the low water bridge adjacent to the Loop 534 Bridge at the end and all walk back together to the Legion. We might have a team from a school band join us at the end but that has not been yet determined. There could also be some employees from the VA Hospital put together a team to make the walk. We also need volunteers to drive the pit-stop van/pick-up. The purpose for that vehicle is to carry the provisions and possibly some medical supplies. All Corpsmen, Medics, and Nurses are encouraged to participate and help with blisters, bad knees, turned ankles, exhaustion, etc. There also needs to be a second vehicle that can carry those who have finished their leg(s) back to the Legion while others are still marching on. Additionally, we would ask for those who want to make the walk to see if you have a mate who will take you and maybe other's to the eta 'ng point. Given a 3 mph pace, 17 miles is 5 hours and 40 minutes. 23 miles = 7.6 hours. [f i can -get pledges and let us have fun. Sign up on the sheets for the legs you want to walk.......Semper Fi #30572 RESOLUTION A Resolution of Kerr County Commissioners' Court expressing support for veterans and Veteran's Day.
