Came to be heard this the 28th day of April, 2008, with a motion made by
Commissioner Baldwin, seconded by Commissioner Williams. The Court
unanimously approved by vote of 4-0-0 to:
Approve the Proclamation which declares the month of May as Elder Abuse
Awareness Month.

Elder Abuse Prevention/ Awareness Month Proclamation
WHEREAS, The elderly have contributed to the general welfare of Texas, Kerr County
by helping to preserve customs, values and traditions of many people from
diverse backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, These residents are vital and integral members of our society and their
wisdom and experience have enriched our lives; and
WHEREAS, Abuse or neglect of the elderly in domestic and institutions( settings are
wide-spread problems, affecting hundreds of thousands of people across
the country; and
WHEREAS, Abuse and neglect affected more than 82,029 seniors in Texas and 232 in
Kerr County last year ;and
WHEREAS, Kerr County has a 25%+ population of seniors over the age of 65 which is
2.5 times the state rate; and
WHEREAS, Elder abuse and neglect are grossly underreported at 84% due to the fear
and shame associated with reporting such abuse; and
WHEREAS, Elder abuse and neglect happen to men and women of all income levels,
and cultural and ethnic groups, whether they are in good health or
incapacitated; and
WHEREAS, Many of these situations in Kerr County involve self-neglect, it is our duty as
citizens to reach out to people in need;
RESOLVED That the Kerr County Commissioners' Court do hereby proclaim the month
of May 2008 to be Elder Abuse Prevention Month in Kerr County, and urge
all citizens to work together to help reduce abuse and neglect of people who
are elderly.
