Child Abuse Awareness Agenda Backup This is the yearly request for the Commissioners to approve & sign the proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month. The board is also asking for permission to tie blue ribbons around several courthouse trees during the month of April. They will be promptly removed at the end of the month. There will be no kickoff event at the courthouse this year due to low public participation. Instead, child abuse awareness flyers will be sent home with school children and 1,000 blue rubber awareness bracelets will be distributed through CASH, K'Star, and several other agencies in Kerr County. 2008 Child Service Board Year-End Report: The board lost members M'lissa Hayes, Ray Garcia, and Debbie Baldwin in 2008, and gained members Lee Fry and Vicki Barron. Current members are: Pam Peter - Co-chair Kathy Banik -Secretary David Billeiter Tom Jones Vicki Barron Ambra Freeman - Co-chair Kathy Carpenter -Treasurer Jennifer Correa-Knoulton Lee Fry April was Child Abuse Awareness month -Commissioners Court adopted a proclamation and blue ribbons were tied around courthouse trees. Working with several local agencies, the board held an April 2"d kickoff event on courthouse grounds with speaker Cheronda Tillman, a state CPS worker who has also been through the foster care system. • In May, the board recognized the county's foster parents by sending them a thank-you card and $25 Chili's gift card. May is Foster Parent Appreciation Month. Twenty-four cards were sent to foster parents. • The board approved setting aside up to $1,000 for summer camps for children in placement. Only one request was made for assistance. The board paid $300 for a child to go to a Girls Incorporated camp. • In August, the board spent $2,000 on 100 Walmart gift cards, which were distributed through CPS to 82 school-aged children for school supplies. • In September, Debbie Baldwin resigned from the board in order to take charge of the Rainbow Room. Even though she is no longer a board member, she is providing amuch-needed service to the children of Kerr County. • The board raised $145 in November by holding a Thanksgiving dinner raffle. • Christmas gift cards were purchased at the end of November and early December. CPS reported 156 children in need of gifts. The board purchased 166 - $25 Walmart gift cards, the 10 extra cards to be used in case the number of children went up. Any remaining Walmart cards will be used to purchase needed items for the Rainbow Room. #3].243 child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month Proclamation WHEREAS, Approximately 10 out of every 1,000 children in Texas are victims of abuse and neglect; and WHEREAS, Child abuse and neglect are preventable, yet each year in the United States, close to one million children are confirmed victims of child maltreatment; and; WHEREAS, The costs of responding to the impact of child abuse and neglect are borne by the victims and their families but also by society; and WHEREAS, Child abuse is a community issue, and communities must work together to make sure the children of Texas have a brighter future by supporting families, providing parents with the skills and resources they need, and creating communities that have supportive services in place and a shared goa{ of safety and stability for families. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Commissioners Court of Kerr County, Texas, does hereby proclaim the month of Apri! 2009 to be Child Abuse Awareness ~ Prevention Month in Kerr County, Texas, and urges all citizens to work together to help reduce child abuse and neglect significantly in years to come.
